Vtape, Toronto
Two new video works will be premiered and on view at Vtape in the fall of 2011. We begin our focus on the work of Mani Mazinani with "Screen Scene", his mesmerizing visual experiment with light and sound. "Screen Scene" yields a rich dialogue between the physical properties of film, digital technologies and chance. At once elegantly simple and intricately textured, Mazinani applies the improvisational techniques of a musician (which he is also) to this experiment in visual phenomena. Screen Scene is a On Saturday the 17th of September between 2pm and 5pm, "Screen Scene" will premiere. Mani Mazinani will give a talk at 3pm. "Oracle" is a collaboartion combining the video construction of Mani mazinani with the musical composition of Udo Kasemets. On Saturday the 1st of October between 2pm and 5pm, "Oracle" will premiere and feature a conversation between Mani Mazinani and Udo Kasemets at 3pm. Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) | Light Air
at Luminato
|| SOLAR BREATH (NORTHERN CARYATIDS) | LIGHT AIR - WORKS BY MICHAEL SNOW AND MANI MAZINANI - AN EXHIBITION CURATED BY ATOM EGOYAN || This exhibition combines a Michael Snow piece with a new work of mine commissioned by Luminato for this installation. Snow’s piece is called Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids), my piece is called Light Air. These video installation works were curated by Atom Egoyan to honour the memory of David Pecaut, Luminato's co-founder. For those of you who missed Michael Snow’s ground breaking show at the Power Plant recently, this is a chance to see a master work from the master. My piece, Light Air, was made in response to Solar Breath. Naturally, the two works have things in common, concentration on the medium of video, colour, form and movement and both works refer to ancient Greek sources. Snow recalls the draped figures of Greek sculpture. I’ve used the work of ancient Greek philosopher Anaximenes to build on thoughts that there is some unity that underlies all physical things. So, in one sense, Light Air combines my thinkings with my thinkings on Snow and Anaximenes. And there is a lot more to each piece than just that. Get more information by visiting the Luminato website: http://www.luminato.com/2010/events/129. Get the most information by visiting the show!

Gravitons perform with CCMC, Canille and Talibam!
at Double Double Land (209 Augusta, down the alley) - 9pm - All Ages
|||TALIBAM! (http://www.myspace.com/talibam) NYC free-rock duo of Kevin Shea (drums) & Matt Mottel (synth) finally make it to Toronto. Melding free-improv. jazz tendencies with spazzy noise-rock and just the right amount of light heartedness, they are producing some of the most interesting music to come out of the noise/free-improv. scenes today. Kevin Shea's classic spastic drum styles define the chaos elements, while Matt's driving synth blast move things at a fevered pace. Inviting a plethora of guests (including Peter Evans, Mike Pride, Tim Dahl of Child Abuse & more!) to play on their various recorded ventures, their sound is forever expanding & mutating, as they pull ideas from no-wave, punk, metal, noise, jazz, world musics & run them through the Talibam! blender. The most fine tuned free band you'll ever see.||| CCMC - Toronto legendary free-improv. group comprised of vocalist Paul Dutton, saxophonist John Oswald (Plunderphonics) and pianist Michael Snow, take free improv. in a direction that's totally their own. Paul Dutton's "soundsinging" mutant vocals are a force on their own, mixing them with saxophone squeaks, & bursts over Snow's alien synth tones, a totally new dialogue is born. After breaking free-improv. ground over 30 years ago, CCMC are still just as fresh & relevant. ||| CANAILLE ELECTRIC TRIO (http://www.canaillemusic.com/) - Jeremy Strachan (Feuermusik, Rockets Red Glare) strips down & reworks his jazz ensemble Canaille into an electric twang-surf trio power house. This band features Mike Smith (Muskox) on bass and Robin Buckley (Tusks) on drums. ||| GRAVITONS (http://freemarketrecords.com/gravitons.htm) Toronto guitar & drums duo create a visceral front of mutated shred guitar and free jazz drumming. Angular distorted notes blurt out, as this band seizures through hectic noise-rock jams. ||| $8 At the Door! ||| facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118262611529977
